Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg stellte die Mitgliedschaft im Völkerbund für die britischen Dominions einen wichtigen Schritt auf dem Weg in die außenpolitische Unabhängigkeit dar. Dabei war der Internationalismus des Völkerbunds kein rein politisches Phänomen, sondern besaß auch eine soziale Dimension. Insbesondere das in Genf angesiedelte Völkerbundsekretariat entwickelte sich schnell zu einem Knotenpunkt des liberalen Internationalismus.
