However, the shown design principles occurring in the Roman catacombs are not locally restricted to Rome, but rather should be understood as basic phenomena of the late antique visual culture, as the study demonstrates by a comparative perspective on the Roman provinces. |

Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit den malerischen Gestaltungsprinzipien spätantiker Grabräume, wie sie in den römischen Katakomben zwischen dem 3. und 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. in Form privater Cubicula entstanden sind. Mithilfe eines bildwissenschaftlich-rezeptionsästhetisch orientierten Ansatzes, der die Wechselbeziehung zwischen Raum, Bild und Betrachter in den Fokus rückt, werden anhand der Anordnung und Kombination häufig dargestellter christlicher Bildmotive erstmals systematisch Regelmäßigkeiten in den malerischen Grabausstattungen herausgearbeitet.
