"Gefangen in Mauthausen" ist Band 3 eines "europäischen Großprojekts zur Geschichte der Überlebenden" (Carlo Moos) und handelt vom Alltag der Häftlinge und ihren Versuchen, selbst im Terrorsystem sich bietende Überlebenschancen zu nutzen. Ihr Tod oder Überleben hing stark davon ab, in welche rassistischen, nationalen, politischen oder beruflichen Kategorien sie von der SS eingeordnet wurden und unter welchen Bedingungen und wann sie ins KZ gekommen waren.
