description Glutathione transferases are abundant enzymes in various aerobic organisms in which they provide cellular protection against reactive compounds that cause mutations and cancer. Their evolution may have been a response to oxidative stress caused by oxygen in the atmosphere. These enzymes also participate in steroid hormone synthesis in both mammals and insects and play important roles in the biotransformation of signaling substances. Their multiple roles also include the binding and transportation of molecules in cells.
