| description | Political Ecology (PE) is a critical and interdisciplinary field in which environmental change, and struggles are studied as they play out in and across cases in the Global South and North. These studies usually combine analyses of material as well as discursive dimensions, and they often focus on power, marginalization and conflicts related to capital accumulation, injustice and neocolonial practices. The field emerged in the 1980s and the politics and social construction of environmental knowledge, combined with empirical investigations, have been among the main themes from the outset. Although sociologists do not dominate in the global PE community, central theories in the PE literature are rooted in classic sociology and critical social science theory more broadly. PE studies are based on combinations of various power perspectives and in particular Weberian actor-oriented theory; Marxist material-economic and structural views on power; discursive ideas about power inspired by Gramsci; and Foucault’s notion of governmentality. |
