Le patrimoine architectural de la ville actuelle s’enorgueillit d’une brochette d’édifices religieux répartis sur plusieurs sites et dont l’histoire s’échelonne de la basse antiquité à nos jours. Les manoirs et autres demeures élevés sous l’Ancien Régime témoignent du statut social et des moyens dont disposaient les principales familles de Sierre. L’ancienne bourgade était alignée sur l’axe de circulation du Valais, la route royale, flanquée au nord de quartiers à dominante rurale. L’urbanisme moderne de Sierre est le corollaire d’un essor économique et démographique suscité par l’industrie de l’aluminium installée au début du XXe siècle dans la commune voisine de Chippis. Cette dernière, qui est également intégrée au présent volume, a été urbanisée en même temps que Sierre et renferme le site récemment réhabilité du château de Beauregard. |
