Jahrhunderts fotografierte Carl Bauer, der Besitzer einer Dampfweberei im westfälischen Dorf Laer bei Münster, sein Leben, seine Familie und seine Fabrik. Rund 400 Glasplattennegative erhielten sich in Familienbesitz und dokumentieren eindrücklich Alltagskultur und Moden vor einhundert Jahren. Dieses Glasplattenkonvolut wird hier exemplarisch als Quelle für die vestimentäre Geschichte diskutiert. Bauers Fotografien mit seinem Blick auf die Familie berühren auch methodische Fragen der privaten Fotografie. Das Hauptaugenmerk dieser Studie liegt aber auf der visuellen Analyse der Kleidungsmode als Signatur der Moderne.
