description Title in English: City: In/Seizable Commonplace The city – a seemingly self-evident term but often used with different meanings by different disciplines. Sometimes it refers to the material structure of streets, parks and squares, sometimes it refers to a way of life, a 'cultural form', a 'community' or a 'mere' administrative unit, or it is defined as the opposite of the countryside. This ambiguity is pursued in the publication The City: A Self-Evident Transfromation? It contains ten texts that represent different scholarly approaches to the city, grounded in different social science disciplines. In the first part of the book, readers will find chapters devoted to conceptual and methodological problems associated with the study of the city, while the second section offers a look at the transformation of the contemporary European city as well as several original case studies from the Czech Republic.
