Amalia Witt beleuchtet Fragen des Erbens und Vererbens von Texten anhand der außergewöhnlichen Freundschaft zwischen dem Autor Montaigne und Marie de Gournay, einer der ersten Herausgeberinnen und Autorinnen der Frühen Neuzeit. Im Zentrum steht dabei das literarische und gesellschaftliche Umfeld Marie de Gournays, die als unverheiratete, alleinlebende und politikinteressierte Frau einen für die damalige Zeit außergewöhnlichen Lebensweg beschritt.
