This assemblage, remarkable both for the number of objects and their state of preservation, constitutes the remains of a first century A.D. healing sanctuary. The major aspects of this find treated in the present work include the context of the discovery; subjects represented (primarily anthropomorphic); typology; carving techniques; « styles »; comparative studies. This votive statuary, an expression of a popular art form known elsewhere in Gaul, is a precursor of the stone statuary of Gallo-Roman provincial art. A CD-Rom catalogue, comprising a data base of 1725 descriptions and photographs, accompanies this volume. The disc presents the most important pieces, now held in the Bargoin museum in Clermont-Ferrand. |
