description The anthology is devoted to the doctrine of animal magnetism, the foundations of which were formulated by Franz Anton Mesmer at the end of the eighteenth century. Although it is seen as pseudoscience today, animal magnetism had an immense influence on the nineteenth-century Western culture, and the work of Mesmer and his apprentices still remains an important chapter in the history of studies on hypnosis. The fragments included in the anthology were sourced from literary pieces, scientific and philosophical studies, the press, and private correspondence. The oldest text dates to 1775 (a letter from Mesmer to Johann Christoph Unzerd’Altona), and the most recent is from 1930 (the novella Mario and the Magician by Thomas Mann). The idea behind collecting excerpts from sources so different in terms of genre and so temporally distant from one another, was to create a catalogue of images and tropes characteristic of a certain imaginarium, which has arisen over time around the magnetic séances.
