| description | The topic of this anthology is not insanity as it is understood in the spirit of Nerval or other Romantic authors. That was covered, to a large extent, by the book published in the first series of ‘The Romantic Library’, Ciemne drogi szaleństwa [Dark Paths of Madness] by Alina Kowalczykowa. The authors of the texts published in the present anthology are only those who use the term ‘illness’. This is, most often, doctors: authors of scientific works, case studies, expert opinions in court. It is not just them, however. It is also public officers, authors of bills on the operation of public hospitals, as well as managers of private hospitals. In this way, the author of the anthology aims to include the various ways in which the medical knowledge functions and is utilised: to show how diagnoses were made, what the process of admitting the insane to the hospital was, how they were treated there, and on what basis they were declared insane. Psychiatry is, however, mostly presented here as one of the languages of creating and maintaining public order. |
