description The aim of Maria Kobielska was (in the most general sense) to create a map of Polish cultural memory after 1989, of the mechanisms of its transformations, ways of influencing it and the main actors involved in these memorial practices. For this purpose, the author chose three events from Polish twentieth-century history, which are central to this field: the Katyń massacre, Warsaw Uprising and martial law. These were chosen due to their recognisability, the extraordinary number of cultural texts relating to them, and the intensity of the politics of memory they are shaped by. The range examined by the author constitutes aspects which are key to the understanding of this field: modal values of the widely-understood Polish cultural memory.
