description The authors reconstruct the narrative ways of building the figure of a witness in selected cultural texts from the war up until the modern day. These texts present the Polish witness separated from the Nazi crimes as an innocent, helpless observer, who ‘helped as much as they could in the circumstances’. They do, however, pass over the influence of Polish behaviours on the fate of the Jews, and our complicity in the Holocaust. Such a narrative, focussed on defending the self-image, dominated political discourse and public consciousness for a long time. The authors ask about the lastingly present cultural models. What did it really mean to be witness of the Holocaust in Poland back then, but also: what has it meant through the passing decades up until today? How were the voices critical to the apologetic image of the witness formed? The authors analyse the, still-valid, co-presence and competing of both of these two trends with one another in our culture.
