description The 1236-1237 investigation into the excesses of the royal bailiffs in the Entre-deux-Mers region of Bordeaux was initiated by Henry III, King of England, in response to complaints from his Gascon subjects and the region’s clergy. The information that came back to him was recorded in a report, drawn up on the initiative of two commissioners, based mainly on the statements of 120 representatives of the parishes of the Entre-deux-Mers ducal. This document, which is exceptional in terms of its form, is also exceptional in terms of the number of subjects it deals with, which betray the concerns of peasant elites whose foundations of social domination were undermined by the installation of the provosts. Beyond what it reveals about the workings of this new administrative level and the violence that accompanied its establishment, this rich report reveals the early customs of a rural region as well as large parts of the political culture of this part of the Gascon peasantry, which was previously unsuspected. It is the unpublished Latin version of these minutes, the longest and most precise, preserved in the small cartulary of the abbey of La Sauve Majeure, which is published here, accompanied by historical comments, a French translation and an index.
