Johann Christoph Gottsched, the president of the university during 1748/49, solicited contributions for a commemorative volume. In the summer of 1749, Gottsched and his wife travelled to Karlsbad and then to Vienna. After visiting scholars and nobleman, they were granted audience with the emperor, the spectacular highlight of the journey.
