Riassunto:Dual nationality agreements, outsourcing of border controls, proliferation of public ministries in charge of diasporas... States are developing a growing number of instruments to intervene beyond their borders. How are policies targeting migratory flows transforming the State? This book renews a debate on transnationalism that has been stimulating migration studies for over thirty years. Thomas Lacroix explores the close relationship between the “transnational state”, i.e. the set of state policies and administrations designed to regulate transnational flows, and the “transnational society”, i.e. the web of social institutions that enable links, practices and relationships to be maintained across borders. The author thus proposes the first comprehensive theory of the transnational state in conjunction with a social theory of transnational society. Based on more than twenty years of research in a variety of fields – in countries of the North and South, and in areas of departure, transit and destination –, this book provides specialists and students with a conceptual toolbox for understanding both the practices of migrants and state policies.
