| Summary: | The first Italian Chair of Slavic Philology was founded in 1920/21 at the University of Padua, that at the time was the nearest academic centre to the Eastern European area. The Dalmatian Giovanni Maver (1891-1970), who had graduated in Romance Philology at the University of Vienna, was appointed as the first Head of the Chair. In Padua, Maver founded a school where different Slavic disciplines where taught; he created a specialized library and established a network of international relations. Gradually, Maver shifted his focus of interest to various research subjects within Polish Studies. Later on he got transferred to the University of Rome, where, since November 1st 1929, the first Italian Chair of Polish language and literature was established. |
