| Sumario: | Around 1953, M. M. Rossi wrote a book on the Italian “anglofilia” in the 18th and 19th centuries. For reasons unknown, the book was never published. Here is a brief account of its contents, with emphasis on the role Rossi assigns to Baretti in the manuscript, which is kept at the Biblioteca Civica Panizzi in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Possibly, Rossi derived the idea of writing this monograph from A. Passerin d’Entrèves, who, in 1953, spoke at the BBC about the supposed “anglofobia” spreading in Italy at the time, sparking a vivid debate both in Italy and the UK that lasted until 1955 at least. |
