Sumario:Modern Japanese spelling conventions incorporate diacritical marks known as dakuten and handakuten. These marks are used to indicate voiced consonants and the presence of the voiceless bilabial plosive /p/, respectively. In this paper, I will outline the historical process that led to the formation of this diacritical mark system in its present form, providing an overview of the development and stabilization of Japanese orthography.
