| Summary: | The term Research Data Management (short RDM) describes the overarching process of organization, storage, preservation, and sharing of data collected and/or used in research projects. The sustainable handling of research data along the different stages of the data life cycle is an applied field of information science that has recently gained international and national momentum. This chapter provides an overview of the (inter)national RDM landscape. It will address current central developments, stakeholders, and research activities from both a national and an international perspective, as well as central publications. Research data centers, which have only just been established in recent years, and the GLAM sector (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums), which has a long-standing history of retaining research data and providing access, are equally taken into account. A further focus is placed on the Arts and Humanities, as these disciplines present not only special challenges for RDM but also form a diverse community of which information (and library) science is a part. Experts from information science work increasingly in institutions concerned with research data and RDM. Therefore, the chapter deals with RDM skills and competencies, as well as the implications of RDM on curricula, professional careers, and the relevance for information and library science. |
