| Özet: | The chapter explores the conceptualization of work/labour and leisure in Hobbes’ philosophy, with a reference to the judicial, philosophical, and historical context of the English 17th century. In accordance with his time, Hobbes devalues leisure while legitimizing coercion to work on the poorer sorts of people. So worthwhile is labour, that the thinker posits it as the vehicle for prosperity and social stability when well ordered by the sovereign within the market space. In this frame, Hobbes seems to distinguish between a specialized work, consistent with independence and citizenship, and low-ranked labour, coupled with servitude and exclusion from full membership. Last, the chapter touches on the ontologico-ethical meaning of labour in Hobbes’ theory. |
