The book traces this connection using the example of France, from the graphic arts of the late sixteenth century to the computer simulation of the early twenty-first century. It sketches a visual history of memory of the Middle Ages at the intersection of art history and history. |

Sie verkörpern eine Epoche, die in Neuzeit und Moderne vielfältige historische, politische und kulturelle Bedeutungszuweisungen erfahren hat, an denen neben Texten auch Bilder beteiligt waren. Materielle Relikte vom Schwertknauf bis zur Kathedrale stehen uns in visuellen Repräsentationen der Graphik, Photographie oder Buchillustration vor Augen. Durch die Transformationsprozesse gezielter künstlerischer Aneignung und medialer Übertragung nehmen dort nicht nur die Überreste selbst, sondern auch die Sicht- und Verständnisweisen Gestalt an, denen die Vergangenheit unterliegt.
