description The recently discovered drawings of Sagemolen (ca. 1660) and the anatomical works published 100 years earlier by Giovanni Battista Canano in 1542 (Muscularum humani corporis picturata dissectio) and by Andreas Vesalius in 1543 (De humani corporis fabrica) represent the illustrations of human anatomical dissections. Vesalius depictions are very precisely explained by an accompanying text, not only discussing the illustrated anatomical structures but also justifying his choices in representing them. Canano describes in detail the dissection of the muscles of the upper limb. His illustrations are drawn by a well-known Ferrarese artist. We will investigate the role of Vesalius and Canani who might have influenced Van Horne and Sagemolen in preparing their marvelous anatomical work.
