Riassunto:Without fear of using equations, the author draws a historical overview of the physical sciences (classical physics, chemistry, quantum mechanics, relativistic theories, elementary particles and cosmology) from Antiquity to the present day. He exposes how these latter, which for a long time relied on the Cartesian mechanism, abandoned it on the advent of quantum mechanics. That was the price to be paid to explain the specific properties of atoms and molecules. After various epistemological considerations, he shows that the intelligibility is omnipresent in contemporary physics and concludes by explaining how antic philosophy remains always actual today.
