description In 1873, the Assumptionists created Le Pèlerin, a modest bulletin to accompany the growing number of pilgrimages. In 1877, they transformed it into a popular weekly aimed at the vast public of Catholic families. Ten years later, they launched a daily newspaper, La Croix, to resist the secularisation of popular culture. Without realising it, these monks were laying the foundations of a media empire, christened La Bonne Presse in 1889, renamed Bayard Presse in 1969 then Bayard in 2021.One hundred and fifty years on, this collective book aims to explore the exceptional longevity of this work-company. Initially the weapon of a ‘crusade’ against the ‘bad press’, it has become the instrument of a peaceful participation of Catholics in the modernization of French society, but also of the ‘good press’. in the modernisation of both French society and the Church. By telling the story of emblematic titles and publishing brands (Pomme d'Api, Notre Temps, etc.) or those that have fallen into oblivion (Le Noël, Bernadette, Alma, etc.), the various chapters shed light on the commitment of managers, journalists, workers and religious, as well as the readers who have made Bayard what it is today. At the crossroads between religious history and the history of the press and publishing, the book shows how La Bonne Presse and then Bayard made an original contribution to the development of the ‘newspaper civilisation’, and also how Catholicism has been transformed by changes in information techniques and professions. This collection, destined to become a benchmark, offers a fresh perspective on the cultural changes in French society over the last century and a half.
