description These studies deal with the interconnection of linguistics and philosophy of language, concentrating especially on generative grammar (and the work of Noam Chomsky and Ray Jackendoff), and analytic philosophy of language (as developed and influenced by Gottlob Frege, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell). The first chapter discusses Gorgias’ and his paradoxical trilemma, concentrating on its consequences for delineating different disciplines and pointing to the power and universality of human language. The chapter also mentions progress in philosophy, with the part dealing with paradigms in humanities and social sciences, with special focus on linguistics. The concept of paradigm is seen in terms of its ontological and argumentative potential. Chapter three concentrates on paradigm shift in generative grammar. Chapter four discusses basic concept in contemporary analytic philosophy of language and philosophy of linguistics, whereas chapter five is devoted to philosophical and linguistic developments in pragmatics. Chapter six looks at conceptual semantics and proposes an additional pragmatic level, it also discusses possible elementary categorial semantics for predication. The book concludes with some thoughts on turns in contemporary cognitive-analytic philosophy. The book is furnished with ample notes and references, the accompanying bibliography might serve as a guide to the field.
