Riassunto:The article contains the results of the study of the functions performed by the phrase 'i to' in verbal messages. The methodology of communicative grammar was used in the study. The first part of the work contains a language system analysis. The phrase 'i to' at the content organization level acts as an addition operator. What draws attention is the functional diversity of the added content. They are both the updaters of ideational images, as well as selected arguments and secondary (meta)verbs. The main role of the analyzed phrase is to indicate that the content that follows is important and even crucial for the correct and complete interpretation of the content of the message. Its use serves the gradation of emotions and has a persuasive function. In the second part of the article, there is an examination of the use of the 'i to' operator in constructing the content of a literary text in the novel by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz "Farewell to Autumn". It should be emphasized that the use of the operator 'i to' in this author's prose is a kind of repetitive technique of the content organization. Creative substitutions of arguments and secondary verbs which specify them, as well as metaverbs requiring an interpretation effort, draw attention. Messages with the phrase 'i to' are accompanied by a valuation, which reflects the emotional states experienced by the characters in the novel.
