| Summary: | GEM (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) is an annual international observatory of the entrepreneurial phenomenon. Its activity in Spain began in 1999 with the help of London Business School and Babson College, and has been reflected in global, national, regional and local reports thanks to the Consortium of countries that comprise it. In 2011, the GEM global observatory on entrepreneurial activity presented its sixth edition in Murcia. Its main mission is to provide data on the measurement of the rate of entrepreneurial activity in the participating nations, regions and cities, as well as a broad description of its characteristics, its relationship with economic development and a diagnosis of the state of the main institutional or environmental conditions for entrepreneurship. Likewise, GEM aims to provide institutions and agents related to entrepreneurship in our region with quality information and indicators that allow progress in terms of support for business creation, contributing to the design of public policies, government programs, the conception of new financial products, the remodeling of educational plans and systems, among other aspects, showing the strengths and weaknesses of the immediate environment faced by all those who have an idea or a business initiative to launch. The results of this report show that the rate of entrepreneurial activity recorded by GEM in the Murcian population aged 18 to 64 in 2011 is 6.4%. This result shows that despite the worsening of the crisis in 2011, the TEA indicator rose by 56.4% compared to the result for 2010. This rise is due to an increase in the two components of the indicator: a 38% increase in nascent activity compared to that recorded in 2010 and a 103% increase in new or consolidating activity compared to that recorded in 2010. Likewise, the result of entrepreneurial activity obtained for 2011 shows that, at least in the first half of the year, the dynamics of consolidating initiatives has had a very significant boost and that the number of businesses that are being created is increasing considerably. However, the volatility of the current economic scenario, subject to constant fluctuations, and the pessimistic estimates regarding the evolution of the main indicators of the same, place us in a scenario of uncertainty regarding the recovery of entrepreneurial activity in Murcia. However, one very positive fact is that the growth of the index has led to the birth of more than 36,000 initiatives in this year, including those that are self-employment cases. The study is completed with time series and comparisons between different types of economies and cultural backgrounds, which provide great value for understanding and learning the mechanisms that articulate entrepreneurship. Therefore, the continuity that this sixth report represents at a regional level allows us to observe the evolution of the main parameters related to business creation. |
