| Summary: | Caring for the cardiovascular health of rural women in the Cauca Valley is vital. The lack of healthcare for rural women is a manifestation of the gender gaps that put their lives at risk. Rural women live under cultural patterns of inequality, and their well-being often falls short of the needs of their families and communities. Some of these women produce healthy food, but are exposed to economic and educational pressures that lead them to sell the food they grow to consume other types of food that put their cardiovascular health at risk. Circulatory and cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of years of potential life lost (YPLL) among people over 60 years of age and the third leading cause of YPLL among people over 29 years of age. This booklet, through a process of Social Appropriation of Knowledge, aims to promote the empowerment of rural women to take care of their health, improve their eating habits, and reduce illness and death from cardiovascular diseases. If rural women are supported in addressing their health risks, they will avoid the need for expensive treatments, and the incidence of heart attacks and strokes, the resulting burden of disability, and the loss of life will be reduced. This contributes to strengthening the rural population and helping achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in the region. |
