| description | This book critically explores the origins of the discipline of Sociology in Sweden. It draws together the political machinations and historical coincidences that contributed to the emergence and dominance of an ahistorical and naïve scientific Sociology that had its roots in the Swedish “people’s home” of post second-world war social welfarism. This naïve sociology disavowed the specific conditions of time and place that made possible its own consolidation as an academic discipline.
The Swedish sociologist –Johan Asplund (1937-2018) – was one critic of the direction that Swedish sociology took after its establishment. Asplund sought to historicise the subject, and, even though he was largely ignored by his peers within sociology, he found appreciation among a wider public readership.
The purpose of Svensk folkhemssociologi: En essä om tid, rum och begreppshistoria is to both illustrate and contribute to a critical understanding of how the dominant field of sociology in Sweden became so resistant to historical perspectives. Throughout this critical examination, and drawing on the writings of Johan Asplund, the author argues for bringing sociology and historical research closer together, in a way that counters the dominant Swedish sociology paradigm. |
