description Yijing benzhi (易經本旨, Original Meaning of the Yijing), compiled in 1774 by Lü Liben, a Qing-dynasty Catholic convert, represents a unique commentary on the Yijing (Classic of Changes) that inherits the Figurist exegetical tradition of the Jesuits. This works interprets the Yijing through a Catholic theological lens, facilitating a dialogue between Yijing and the Bible while revealing the dynamic interplay between Chinese and Western value systems. Moreover, it stands as a testament to the efforts of indigenous Chinese Catholic communities to preserve their faith following the withdrawal of Jesuit missionaries during the prohibition of Christianity—making it a hitherto neglected gem of Figurist Yijing scholarship. The author of this study meticulously collates, punctuates, and annotates the existing manuscript of Yijing benzhi, focusing on its intertextual connections with both traditional Chinese classics and Catholic theological writings . Through this meticulous analysis, the work traces the origins and integration of Yijing philosophy and theological thought. By introducing this Figurist interpretation of the Yijing—authored by a Chinese Catholic—this book not only challenges the academic stereotype that Figurist Yijing studies were solely foreign imports but also forges new pathways in the research of Catholicism in China and the history of Sino-Western religious-cultural exchange.

2025-08-04T09:21:00Z 2025-07-02T03:22:56Z 2025-08-04T09:21:00Z 2024 book 9789882373099 https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/161891.2 chi application/octet-stream Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International https://cup.cuhk.edu.hk/ChristianYijing https://julac-cuhk.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/852JULAC_CUHK/16slfhk/alma991040690049403407 The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press 10.978.988237/3099 《易經本旨》乃清代天主教徒呂立本於乾隆三十九年(1774)編撰的《易經》注本,承繼耶穌會索隱派的易學傳統,從天主教角度詮釋《易經》。 10.978.988237/3099 60de9db5-5473-4eec-8298-565c2675bad7 9789882373099 The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press 620 Hong Kong open access
