Riassunto:In 1910, a modest Bulletin des professeurs catholiques de l'Université was born. Its aim was to bring together religious teachers in state schools at a time when their existence was being challenged by the intransigence of both the Church and the secular Republic. The initiative stumbled during the Great War, but was reborn afterwards and gave rise to an original movement based on a dual loyalty: to the secular nature of schools and to a Catholic faith that was not intransigent. It was this movement, which brought together teachers from all three levels of education - primary, secondary and higher education - that in the early 1930s took the name of ‘Paroisse universitaire’ [University parish]: ‘Paroisse’ [Parish] to affirm that it was indeed Church-based and ‘universitaire’ [University] to say that its members, trained in the secular university, were at its service. It met every year in travelling ‘University Days’, which became increasingly successful, culminating in those held in Rome in 1951. This essay traces the major stages in its history, from its fragile beginnings before 1914 to its apogee after 1945, right up to the religious and educational crisis of the 1960s.
