Tracing back to its roots, historicism stems from later generations questioning the nature of “history.” Beyond the solid archaeological evidence, how much of what is written truly reflects actual history? And how much is the historian’s own speculation? This kind of reflection began in the 19th century with Leopold von Ranke, who re-examined the way history is presented. As historical research made groundbreaking progress, various social sciences emerged, each challenging historiography from their own perspectives. History faced criticism from many fronts, but through this clash and stimulation, mutual influence led to the forging of new heights in historical scholarship.
This book describes the turning points in historiography. Thanks to the insights of these historians, historical writing has gained broader scope, greater openness, and deeper understanding. Because of their influence, past events truly come to life when we write or read history. |
