This text describes the battle between the Russians and the Swedes at Gemauerthof in July 1705. It relates that after a successful attack on Mitava, the Russians engaged a large detachment of Swedes under General Lewenhaupt but were defeated as a result of a reckless act by Colonel Ignatiev. Analysis reveals that Holberg followed the text of Russian reports on the battle of Mur-Myz. In the Danish version, the Russian Colonel Ignatiev is a prominent figure, here named Ignatius, and is among several people with this name who attracted Holberg's attention, including the "mad" Ignatius of Loyola. |
