Beskrivelse
Summary:In the face of the Holocaust and the German war of annihilation in Eastern Europe, an extraordinary world tour took place in 1943: The actor Solomon Mikhoels and the poet Itsik Fefer traveled to dozens of locations in North America and Great Britain on behalf of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. The two Soviet envoys appeared at major events and were received by celebrities such as Albert Einstein, Shalom Asch, and Nahum Goldmann. In a unique mission, they mobilized for Jewish unity against National Socialism and solicited military and humanitarian support for the Soviet Union. Starting from this "Eynikayt," the author describes the political, national, and cultural visions and contradictions that arose within and beyond the Jewish community. The study contextualizes the tour, which took place between two Stalinist waves of terror, in relation to the fluctuating relationships of the Soviet Jewish population with their own state and the fragile situation within the anti-Hitler coalition.
