Shrnutí:This book is written for physicians, medical students, and mental health professionals in South Africa, providing the Incapacity and Legal Status Assessment Algorithm (ILSAA) by which the assessment of someone’s legal status in terms of the South African Mental Health Care Act (MHCA) may be practised among actual patients as well as on a set of clinical case narratives published in this book. ‘Practise’ in the title of the book thus invokes two senses of the word. First, it refers to professional practice for which the algorithm is meant to aid and bring about legally and ethically accountable and sequential decision-making. Second, it refers to exercising and improving professional assessment skills and knowledge through application of the algorithm on clinical case narratives that capture a variety of authentic clinical presentations.
