| Gaia: | Citizen journalism is a product of modern society and a rising phenomenon in the age of digital networks and personal media devices. The emergence of citizen reporters reflects a gap between public expectations and the performance of professional journalists in covering and commenting on public affairs. Whether in democratic or authoritarian states, citizen journalists—like their traditional counterparts—play an indispensable role in documenting everyday life, capturing what people see, hear, and think. However, their roles and functions differ. To be both “citizen” and “journalist” is to construct an alternative form of journalism—a response of dissatisfaction with, and a challenge to, institutional mainstream media. |
