Sumario:The years 1997 and 1999 marked turning points for Hong Kong and Macao. Soon after their return to Chinese sovereignty, the global economy underwent major shifts, leading to stagnation. At the same time, due to globalization, amid China’s economic rise and adjustments to laissez-faire capitalism, their inherent advantages gradually eroded. This book comprises two volumes. Written in clear, vivid prose, it reviews how the global environment over the past twenty years shaped both economies. The Hong Kong volume examines changes in economic functions before and after the handover, existing strengths, and potential weaknesses; the Macao volume explores measured diversification and SME development strategies, offering recommendations. Together, the volumes provide a timely reassessment of the futures of Hong Kong and Macao in a rapidly changing world.
