description Since the Tang dynasty, the collision and convergence of Chinese culture and Christianity have been among the most elusive facets of East–West exchange. For missionaries and Chinese Christians, how does the “beauty” of Chinese and Western art relate to the “truth” of faith? Is aesthetic judgment innate, yielding cross-cultural consensus, or do certain forms of beauty require prior recognition of the truth embedded within them? A sister volume to Christianity and China—A Historical and Philosophical Perspective, this book focuses on culture and art while preserving the spirit of the earlier work. Without presupposing the validity of Christianity or atheism, the author analyzes Chinese history, literature, philosophy, and art alongside Western thought, rigorously tracing sources to discuss how China and Christianity meet in culture and art. Spanning from the Ming to the present, the book moves from overviews to focused cultural problems; from culture to art; and from art back to aesthetics and values—balancing text and art, macro and micro, case study and synthesis, exchange and conflict—offering rich meaning in a concise form and serving as an accessible introduction to the humanities.
