Sammanfattning:The monograph contains analyses of three selected works from the Polish literary canon and their film adaptations, considered classics of Polish cinema: Bolesław Prus' novel Faraon and the film Faraon (dir. Jerzy Kawalerowicz, 1965), Stanisław Wyspiański's drama Wesele and the film Wesele (dir. Andrzej Wajda, 1972), and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz's short story Matka Joanna od Aniołów and the film Matka Joanna od Aniołów (dir. Jerzy Kawalerowicz, 1960). The order of the chapters follows the chronology of the publication of the literary works. The book concludes with a discussion of the anthropological and morphological method of film analysis developed by Seweryn Kuśmierczyk. The authors paint a broader picture of the cultural processes in which literary texts from late positivism to the 20th century were part of the developmental phases of literary and film discourse. For their presentation, they chose works whose film adaptations were of key importance for the historical development of Polish film poetics and have retained their vitality from a contemporary and historical perspective. In her analyses of literary works, Lidija Rezoničnik, drawing on an extensive bibliography and the latest research findings, focuses on three levels of the text's existence: the process of its creation, analysis and reception. She takes into account the works' broader socio-historical and cultural context. The analyses and interpretations of the films are comprehensive, detailed and in-depth, covering content and formal features, reception and the broader impact of the work, and placing the films in a cultural and anthropological context. They contain information obtained directly from conversations with the filmmakers. Seweryn Kuśmierczyk uses a new methodological approach – anthropological and morphological analysis.
