| Shrnutí: | Metropolises are dynamic urban centers where the complex social, economic, and political structures of the modern world converge. These cities, shaped by high population density, cultural diversity, and rapid urbanization, offer unique opportunities while also presenting significant challenges. Security is a fundamental component in ensuring the sustainability and social cohesion of metropolitan areas. However, assessing security policies and practices from the perspective of human rights and civil society is crucial for the inclusive and just governance of contemporary cities.
The academic activity titled “Security in the Istanbul Metropolis: Human Rights and Civil Society Perspectives”, jointly organized by Istanbul University and the Turkish National Police Academy in May 2024, aimed to address these critical issues within an interdisciplinary framework. As the first collaboration between these two prestigious higher education institutions, this event examined metropolitan security in relation to individual rights, social dynamics, and international experiences through comparative analysis. The conference brought together academics, members of the Turkish National Police, and civil society representatives, fostering discussions from both local and global perspectives, which ultimately contributed to the creation of this book. This book stands out with its comprehensive coverage of metropolitan security through a diverse range of original topics. Chapters such as “Metropolises, Public Order, and Policing Theory” and “Evaluation of Cameras Used in Crime Prevention in the Context of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms: From KGYS to Body Cams” explore the ethical dimensions of contemporary security approaches by analyzing the tension between technology and human rights. Meanwhile, studies focusing on historical and theoretical perspectives, such as “The Emergence of Metropolitan Areas and Istanbul”, discuss the social and spatial development of the metropolitan concept. In this context, chapters like “Metropolitan Safety in Canada” and “Metropolises and Violence in Developing Countries: The Case of Karachi” present comparative analyses of different geographical experiences.
The symposium also highlighted the impact of security policies on social structures. For example, “Child7Friendly Cities and Children’s Rights” examines the influence of urban planning and social policies on children, who represent the future of our societies. Similarly, studies like “The Impact of Urban Transformation on Crime” and “The Right to Housing and Metropolitan Security” investigate how the physical and social transformations of cities affect individuals’ perceptions of security and overall social order. |
