description There is currently significant strategic competition between the great powers in international politics. This is a competition for increased influence, economic advantages, information superiority, and other security policy, technological, and military strategic advantages. The competitive situation also applies in the Arctic, where the threat landscape is characterized by both traditional and new security challenges in what may appear to be a “gray zone” between deep peace and open war. In this gray zone, we see that states are using various types of complex means to achieve political goals. Among other things, intelligence, the ability to construct and disseminate favorable narratives, special forces, and new technology are essential for gaining information superiority, influence, and the ability to project power. The target audience for this book is researchers and students of political science, history, law, and military subjects such as war studies. In addition, the book will be of interest to readers with a general interest in security policy who are concerned with the challenges of tomorrow at a time when the rules of the international state system are becoming less clear. The editor of the book, Njord Wegge, is a professor of political science at the Norwegian Military Academy / Norwegian Defense University College and an adjunct professor at UiT The Arctic University of Norway.
