I believe that interviews are a way of communicating something ephemeral, perhaps gaining greater projection and permanence over time if they are published in book form. Encouraged by this idea (which is perhaps nothing more than an illusion), I decided to select some of the interviews that I have on record (most of them I don't even know where they are) and put them together in book form. For an octogenarian like me, it's an attempt to prolong my own life. I don't think it's vanity (maybe a little...). When readers reach my age, they will understand better what I mean. I only personally know the interviewers of the first three interviews I selected for this book. Some of the questions (only a few, those relating to aspects of my personal life and my activities in the field of citizenship) may have arisen from the interviewers' knowledge of my life. But, in general, they are academic interviews, although the third and final ones are more related to the sphere of citizenship. They took place at different times and in different contexts. Five of them were carried out on the initiative of colleagues of mine, professors at various universities in Brazil. Three were proposed and conducted by journalists. The last interview selected - which I was very happy to do - was suggested to me by a Portuguese student in Paris, who lived in the Casa de Portugal in the University City, where I lived while preparing my doctorate between September 1973 and April 1974. |

Creio que as entrevistas são um modo de comunicar algo efémero, ganhando, talvez, maior projeção e uma permanência maior no tempo se forem publicadas em forma de livro. Animado por esta ideia (que talvez não passe de uma ilusão), decidi selecionar algumas das entrevistas de que guardo registo (a maior parte delas nem eu sei por onde andarão), e reuni-las em livro. Para um octogenário como eu, é uma tentativa de prolongar a minha própria vida. Não me parece que seja vaidade (talvez um pouco…). Quando os leitores chegarem à minha idade, compreenderão melhor o que quero dizer. Só conheço pessoalmente os entrevistadores das três primeiras entrevistas que selecionei para este livro. Algumas perguntas (poucas, as que se reportam a aspetos da minha vida pessoal e das minhas atividades no terreno da cidadania) poderão ter surgido a partir do conhecimento que os entrevistadores tinham da minha vida. Mas, em geral, são entrevistas de cunho académico, embora a terceira e a última se insiram mais na esfera da cidadania. Aconteceram em tempos diferentes e em contextos diferentes. Cinco delas foram realizadas por iniciativa de Colegas meus, professores em várias Universidades do Brasil. Três foram propostas e conduzidas por jornalistas.
