| 要約: | The second volume of “The History of the University of Warsaw” covers the period from September 1915, when the German occupation authorities reactivated the University of Warsaw with Polish as the language of instruction, to the end of World War II in 1945. In addition to providing a concise overview of the institution's history, the authors paint vivid portraits of the UW staff and student communities and, particularly important given the dramatic events that have shaped Poland's history over the last two centuries, recount the history of the university's relations with the political authorities.
In the 20th century, as in the previous century, the university shared the dramatic fate of the country and its capital. After three years under German rule during World War I, the university smoothly entered a period of independence, soon becoming the largest university in the Second Polish Republic. Until the outbreak of another war in 1939, the political and national conflicts characteristic of the young Polish state, as well as modernization processes, were concentrated here as if in a lens. World War II and the German occupation of Warsaw interrupted the functioning of the university, bringing enormous human and material losses. The authors decided that this period also had to be discussed in the “History,” if only because the university continued its teaching activities, and to some extent also its scientific activities, underground, as part of a secret teaching program.
The three richly illustrated volumes of the “History of the University of Warsaw” are the first attempt in nearly 40 years to present a comprehensive history of the University of Warsaw, covering the history of the university from its inception to the present day. |
