סיכום:The third volume of “The History of the University of Warsaw” covers the period from the end of World War II in 1945 to the present day. In addition to providing a concise overview of the institution's history, the authors paint vivid portraits of the University's staff and student communities and, particularly important given the dramatic events that have shaped Poland's history over the last two centuries, recount the history of the University's relations with the political authorities. In the years 1945-1989, as in the interwar period, the University of Warsaw occupied an extremely important place in the complex relations between the scientific community, academic youth, and state authorities – this time subordinate to the ruling communist party. The events that took place here were often of great importance for the situation in the whole country, to mention only the student protests brutally suppressed in March 1968 or the formation of the democratic opposition. The face of the university also changed, as the authors sought to show, along with the social transformations that were taking place. The History ends with a chapter devoted to the university in the period after the fall of the communist system in 1989. Although these years are relatively close to the present day, it was decided to include them, concluding that without the most important facts about the last quarter-century of the university's history, the picture of its history would be far from complete. The three richly illustrated volumes of “The History of the University of Warsaw” are the first attempt in nearly 40 years to present a comprehensive history of the University of Warsaw, covering the history of the university from its inception to the present day.
