Summary:This publication reveals the unpublished work of the American art historian Robert C. Smith (1912-1975) dedicated to the King John V Library of Coimbra, in terms of its history, architecture and art. It establishes a chronology of the library’s works from its beginnings until the restoration work carried out by the former DGEM between 1943-45, reveals the artists who worked on it and looks for the authorship of the project. It is presented in a bilingual critical edition of the original work dating from 1974, as for the updating of its contents concerns.
