Przegląd dzieł różnych autorów pozwala na wydzielenie dwóch okresów kształtowania się polskiej terminologii gramatycznej: pierwszego – od publikacji dwujęzycznej gramatyki Eliusza Donata (ok. 1530 roku) do wydania pierwszej gramatyki języka polskiego Walentego Szylarskiego (lata 70.
