Ensaio Geográfico, Coimbra, 1940, is undoubtedly the best-known work by Professor Alfredo Fernandes Martins, at the time a student of geographical sciences. With the 85th anniversary of its publication approaching, much has changed in terms of society, of which he was, in fact, a great advocate. If this work were written today, he would probably have titled his degree thesis ‘The Effort of Human Beings in the Mondego Basin’. This is a brief introductory note which, especially for younger readers, merely aims to place this publication in the historical context in which it was published and to highlight the collective meaning that was then attributed to certain terms, some of which have since fallen into disuse, a situation that in no way detracts from the author's remarkable work.
