description Despite increasing investments in wildfire management, the occurrence of larger and more intense wildfires has become more frequent. Consequently, the impact on infrastructure located in high-risk areas has led to dramatic situations, involving the destruction of assets with significant economic and social value and, in extreme cases, the loss of human lives. This work aims to share technical and scientific knowledge on the most effective ways to manage wildfire risk in buildings, specifically dwellings. Three essential components are considered – the building itself, its surroundings, and self-protection capacity. These are examined in relation to current legislation and policies in Portugal. The content will be of primary interest to both technical and non-technical professionals involved in wildland-urban interface fire management, as well as to the general public, especially to citizens with buildings located in fire-prone areas.
